I just got a text message from Gabe.
Dan
ny Federici, for 40 years the E Street Band's
organist and keyboard player, died
in New York City after a three year battle with
melanoma.
Bruce Springsteen's concerts scheduled for Friday in
Ft. Lauderdale and Saturday in Orlando performance
are being postponed. Replacement dates will be
announced shortly. I guess that will make Monday's
Tampa concert the first in which the band will play
after this loss. It is sure to be an even more
emotional performance than usual.
Vinyl Fever will be
donating a portion of Saturday's Record Store Day
sales to
the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund.
After taking a leave of absence from the tour to work
full-time on his recovery, Danny Federici treated
Indianapolis fans to a special
appearance on March 20th.
Here, from that show, is an excerpt from
one of Danny's signature accordion performances on
the rarely-played 4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
.
I have this rant that I give to people who pick and
choose what songs from their CDs to put on their
iPod and to highlight my complaint with the "singles"
mentality that has become so prevalent with today's
downloading culture: There are songs that I skipped
over when I
was
18 years old that later became some of my favorite
songs on an album. A perfect example of this is Wild Billy's Circus Story from
The Wild, The Innocent
and
The E Street Shuffle. This is a showcase song of
Danny Federici- his sublime accordion on this little
known track paints a poignant picture. I probably
wasn't mature enough at the time to appreciate the
childlike innocence conjured up as he, Bruce and
band took us inside the circus. No
other rocker in their right mind but Springsteen could
have written that song ("Fat Lady, Big Mama, Missy
Bimbo - sits in her chair and yawns") and he could
never have done it without that band. Federici's
accordian was pivotal. I also use that song as an
example of how ANY
instrument can be used in rock and roll.
What a great legacy and fine example to all
of us! Rock in peace,
-Lee
