HUMONGOUS IN-STORE COMING UP!
JJ Grey (of Mofro) Free Acoustic Performance at Vinyl Fever!
In between Mofro
gigs at Skipper's (that
Friday and
Saturday night), JJ Grey has graciously accepted
our
invitation to play here! Mark your calendar for
Saturday, 2/23 (time to be
determined). We're going to have all kinds of fun with
this, including ticket and CD giveaways, for a start.
J.J. Grey doesn't need pyrotechnics or an elaborate
stage show to captivate an audience. All he needs is
a
microphone, a harmonica and a guitar or two and he'll
pull the crowd straight into his world of dirty, authentic
Southern grooves and deep fried soul. His lyrics are
reminiscent of the great southern poets- fiercely
personal, universal, and political without a hint of
superiority or preachiness.
Stop on by, enjoy an amazing in-store and get a
CD autographed by JJ himself! We'll be plenty-
stocked up on 2007's Country Ghetto and both
of the recently reissued, independent Mofro releases
on Alligator Records- 2001's Blackwater and
2004's Lochloosa.
JJ was featured on an old Jeff Corwin episode!

LIKE A GIFT EVERY TIME
that's V-I-N-Y-L
Record stores have been getting quite the publicity
burn recently and we're here to tell you that the reports
of our demise are greatly exaggerated. As people
have been touting the decline and fall of CDs, a funny
thing has happened to another music medium that
went through a similar downfall. Vinyl records
have returned, offering up their golden warm analog
sound and beautifully large format artwork to a new
and returning swarm of customers. It's not just hype-
it's an attitude of what music means to us. With an
artist's music being nearly ubiquitous by way of
compressed MP3 files over the Internet, this quote
from a record presser highlight some of the many
attractions of vinyl:
To Jason Durham (of Brooklynphono), the difference
between vinyl and digitized music is like comparing a
formal dinner to fast food. "I think it's got to do not only
with the sound but the ritual of playing the record," he
said, "and also just the whole packaging. It's like a gift
every time you open it."
As record hounds, we couldn't agree more.
----------
Mark your calendars for April 19th- NATIONAL
RECORD STORE DAY (yeah- really!):
a few quotes from our musician friends, that got us all
verklempt:
David and Don Was (Not Was)
"In the beginning was the record store, more like a
modern-day temple with its attendant priesthood and
initiates, a holy repository of the culture's most sacred
beats and rhymes. By comparison, the internet is a
clean room in a hospital -- it lacks the funk and feeling
of a place with floors and ceilings and racks full of
soul-stirring goodness. May they persist till someone
turns the lights out on this small planet! Here's to the
true believers -- keep the faith, brothers and sisters!"
Paul McCartney
"There's nothing as glamorous to me as a record
store. When I recently played Amoeba in LA, I realised
what fantastic memories such a collection of music
brings back when you see it all in one place. This is
why I'm more than happy to support Record Store Day
and I hope that these kinds of stores will be there for
us all for many years to come. Cheers!"
Shelby Lynne
"You can't roll a joint on an iPod - buy vinyl!"

Listening Post Features for February
Get intimate with our headphones
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Forty years after the Summer of Love (and 30 years
after
the Summer of Hate), MGMT is celebrating the grand
re-opening of the third eye of the world with Oracular
Spectacular- a collection of
hallucinatory sounds and hook-riddled pop tunes for
the new millennium.
T.H. White - The Private Spotlight
T.H. White's second album, The Private
Spotlight, was
released in December 2007.
A ten-song collection that spotlights its author's
surplus of talents as multi-instrumentalist (and crack
guitarist), producer, songwriter, arranger, and
programmer, The Private Spotlight manages
that rare
feat: amalgamating an intriguing variety of sonic
textures into a cohesive - and fun - set of songs that
might just provide a soundtrack to the bustling city
from which it draws inspiration.
Joe Jackson - Rain
With its adventurous spirit and piano-based sound,
Rain boasts plenty of humor, swing and
sophistication among barbed social commentary and
even some punk-like rocking out.
Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static
The first single If I Had Eyes can be heard on
radio
stations throughout the country. Jack Johnson will
start a US and
European tour in June 2008. Each US tour date will
have an "Eco Village" supporting both national and
local environmental non-profit organizations (including
Climate
Counts, Surfrider and Vote the Environment).
Radiohead - In Rainbows
"in terms of songwriting, production and execution this
is Radiohead at its most inspired" - The New York
Times
"the band's most accessible release ever"-
Entertainment Weekly
"Radiohead's most emotionally resonant songs in a
decade" - Spin
"Radiohead haven't sounded this aggressive and
infuriated - so rock and roll - since OK COMPUTER, an
achievement that will be worth the usual retail price
when IN RAINBOWS comes out on CD in January."
#6 album of the year -Rolling Stone
"In Rainbows had no serious rival this year'" #1 BEST
ALBUM 2007 - New York Magazine
"surprising and addictive" ALBUM OF THE YEAR -
Mojo
