Jennifer O'Connor
Sunday, Sep 04, 2005   2:00

Upcoming Matador recording artist and ex- Vinyl Feveree came back to Tampa.

O'Connor's music is edgy, not washed in warm harmonies, not adorned with pretty-sounding chords. The ear-candy factor is low on her latest disc, The Color & The Light, but it's rich in emotional resonance. It's achy and raw, but delivered with a refreshing lack of sentimentality and no apologies.

O'Connor grew up in the small town of Danielson, Connecticut, but relocated to Florida when she was 13. College brought her to Atlanta, and now, at 31, she's a New Yorker. Her first band was an Atlanta-scene entity called Violet. In it, Jennifer played bass. She describes the sound of the band as being slightly more pop-savvy than her solo recordings, with a 90's alterna-rock bent. When she arrived in New York, she releaased an EP, Time Love Work, which is ultra-sparse compared with the new material. Producer/multi-instrumentalist, Al Weatherhead, known for working with former Helium front gal, Mary Timony, collaborated with O'Connor on her new disc...and it rocks. Gently.
